Let's Get Clear on the SAMR Model

STEP #1 - The SAMR Model... some of you have been hearing about the SAMR model for over a year. Do we really understand the levels of the model? How do we get teachers to think about this model? More important... what questions do we use, to guide our teachers, as they plan, implement and reflect in a blended teaching and learning environment?

The goal of SAMR is  to transform learning experiences so they result in higher levels of achievement for students.

Dr. Ruben Puentedura shares some wonderful examples of how teachers can move 'above the line' and transform rather than simply enhance student learning experiences through the use of technology.

We invite you to CHOOSE one of the two videos below. If you feel like you have a strong grasp of the SAMR model and how it looks in the classroom, please feel free to view the 12:58 video; if you would like to explore some examples in more depth, we invite you to view the 28:56 keynote video from the OETC conference in Seattle. As you are viewing the video, we ask you to develop questions that you, as a coach, might use with teachers while planning, implementing and reflecting on a technology rich lesson and it's alignment to the SAMR model. You will submit your list of questions in the assignment, Understanding the SAMR Model, in the Module. (TIP - Chapter 4 in your reading, The Art of Asking Questions Online, may be helpful in designing your questions. Whether in a face to face or online environment, this is a skill that can always be refined.)

STEP #2 - The SAMR Model according to students... Just for fun... your choice... watch the 3:54 video these students put together to describe how the SAMR model works.

STEP #3 - Let's Deconstruct Some Examples... As a connected educator, one of my favorite blogs to follow is Matt Miller's, Ditch that Textbook Links to an external site.. Read his April, 2015 blog post, A SAMR Deep Dive Links to an external site.. Review the blog post and the deconstruction of the two activities, Virtual Cultural Exchange and Diigo Bookmarking. Now you get to choose your assignment.

Option #1 - Summarize an activity that you have used with students or you have observed a teacher using. Now, as Matt Miller modeled,  deconstruct it into the SAMR levels.

OR

Option #2 - Take one of Matt's activities and use specific examples, for each level, to support or challenge his example.

Submit the option you chose in the module under the assignment: Deconstructing the SAMR Model with Matt Miller
